Shira 2 Camp is a spectacular high-altitude site located further east across the vast Shira Plateau. After the steady trek from Shira 1, arriving at Shira 2 rewards climbers with an even more dramatic perspective of the mountain. The camp offers world-class, unobstructed views of Kibo Peak to the east and, on clear days, a breathtaking vista of Mount Meru floating above the clouds to the west. The landscape here is true alpine moorland—a stark, beautiful expanse of volcanic rock, giant lobelias, and senecios that creates an otherworldly atmosphere under the vast African sky.

The environment at Shira 2 is characterized by its exposure and thin air. Because there is no natural shelter from trees or ridges, the camp is often buffeted by strong mountain winds. Daytime temperatures can be deceptively warm under the intense high-altitude sun, but the moment the sun sets, the temperature plummets rapidly, often reaching well below freezing. This camp is a vital “bridge” in the journey, serving as the final flat expanse before the route turns upward toward the daunting Lava Tower and the southern circuit.

Shira 2 Camp is essential for the “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization strategy. Resting here allows the body to consolidate the gains made during the trek across the plateau, preparing the respiratory and circulatory systems for the much higher elevations encountered in the following days.
