Shira 1 Camp is a pivotal resting point located on the western edge of the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in the world. As the second overnight stop for climbers on the Lemosho Route, it marks a dramatic transition from the lush montane rainforest into the heath and moorland zone. The dense forest canopy gives way to wide-open, wind-swept landscapes characterized by volcanic soil, low shrubs, and hardy heather. This camp offers trekkers their first unobstructed, panoramic views of the Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys, creating an atmosphere of remote, alpine vastness.

The weather at Shira 1 Camp is significantly different from the lower forest camps. Days are typically cool and exposed, with temperatures averaging around 10°C (50°F), while nights can drop sharply, often falling below freezing. The plateau is known for its high winds and damp mists that can roll in suddenly, making the environment feel instantly colder and more challenging.

Physiologically, Shira 1 Camp is a critical milestone for acclimatization. Because it sits well above the tree line, it is often the first place where climbers begin to notice the effects of thinner air. The camp provides a necessary buffer, allowing the body to adapt to the altitude before the steeper climbs toward the Lava Tower and Shira 2.
